How to make linkbaits from boring sites

Sat, Aug 23, 2008

Blogging, Featured, Marketing, Personal

If you have a site about a very boring topic, i.e. toasters, how could you ever get natural links for you site?  I mean, article submissions, social media submissions, directories can only take you so far.

Think about the random.site.dot.com story….

So essentually random.site.dot.com wanted to get ranked for credit cards. He made up a story about “13 Year Old Kid Steals Dad’s Credit Card to Buy Hookers” (it did not originally have the disclaimer present now). Long story short, it got picked up by some news agencies and digg, and spread like wildfire. It was completely false. But that’s not important.

What is important is the key terms “Credit Card” being in the title/headline. Because guess what? when people link back, that’s what they’re going to use.  The article got thousands of links itself and was ranking pretty highly for credit cards. And it’s a barely link baitable field.

Getting it now?

How many deaths per year involve toasters? Now how many other random death facts can you find? (you could use the toaster as a nice title to snag attention).  Is there anything interesting about how the toaster was build/made?  Did toast actually improve on sliced bread?

Even something stupid like a flash game allowing you to throw toasters at world leaders.

Or how about a desktop application (can be something like a timer, just with toaster in the name)…have it on a page not on the menu or whatever (but linking back home). All of a sudden you’re able to submit it to any one of a number of shareware/freeware sites…many of which link back.

So, think outside the box… and good luck!
